Memorable moment
This week we crossed the border into Guatemala, and our first point of call was the Tikal ruins.
Whilst trying to find accommodation at El Remate, we were chased and flagged down by a girl in a yellow bikini; we stopped, of course, and discovered it was a friend we met in Zipoilite. We took the accommodation that was on offer there and, again, it was an idealistic location on a large freshwater lake, with cheap lodgings and food.
On leaving 4 days later, we met 2 German bikers at a petrol station and rode with them for the day. That evening we all pitched in to make the evening meal. They pulled out stoves, plates and lights and did the cooking, and we bought the beer.
Original Week 12 accountPictures of the week
"Stop Martin, there is a girl in a yellow bikini chasing us," - Jarrad with his keen eyesight.
"I think you have a problem," - Thomas, the German bike mechanic, on looking at the back of Martin's bike where smoke was bellowing. Problem: one melted hammock.
Climbing a wooden jetty pillion, which stood 5 feet out of the water.
Winner: the cocky local lad, who not only climbed the pole in 2 seconds but proceeded to jump from one to the next.
Relaxing with good friends, visiting awesome ruins, riding on breath-taking tracks, meeting new people
Riding on some extreme mountain tracks whilst being careful not to be hit by buses and trucks, which drive by the "might is right" rule.Risk factor8/10.
Getting concrete thrown on the bikes by sloppy builders, but after pointing out the mess to them, one removed his shirt and wiped the bikes clean.
Riding home from Tikal, Martin’s bike ran out of fuel 3 miles short of the destination. Determined to get as close as possible before stopping, he managed to coast the last 3 miles home, reaching speeds of 40 MPH with only one gentle push from Jarred riding alongside.
