The bike

Bike as new with all options except endro wheels and tourtech boxes fitted

For bike specifications

After 12 months of looking for a bike and refining our criteria, (had to be versatile, more that a bike just for the trip, had to be light enough for off road play, had to be though and reliable) After several bike test rides the only solution was the KTM LC4 640.

We wiped down to Brackens Motorbike Workshop in London, tried to organize a deal on two bikes and ordered two 2001 KTM LC4 640's initially in super-moto format.

While this was enough on its own we included the following options to make the bike overland ready:

*Extra Enduro wheels ( 21" and 18") and hubs complete with Metzla Sahara Enduro 3 tyres - these were left in the shed until just before the trip, well London had little mud to provide the incentive to change

*18 litre tank - actually provided to be good crash protection of the radiators, thanks to the guy in the green ford for helping with this test

*Abraces hand guards-

*Handle bar end weights - to reduce the vibration on long trips

*Aluminium KTM sump guard - The trip to date has put some nice dents in this item, its doing its job

*Tourtech Aluminium panniers and frame - maybe expensive but fits perfectly. On a time and effort basis doubt you will kind a better solution

Prior To Departure

Changed the rear sprocket to a 42 tooth steal - currently 18,000 km and very little wear

Changed the front sprocket from 16 teeth down to 15- for the mountain, off road and slow town stuff - although bike revs a little more at 100kmh it is a lot better.

Install inline filter

Run spare clutch cable next to the original

Attach Touratech frame and panniers

Replace front super-moto mudguard for enduro guard - the shorter guard threw up a little more mud than the longer one

Fall off twice - Well how else are you going to know is the bike is going to take it on the road

Mods we would like to do on return

Increase the power output of the bike of the standard bike by:

Air box modifications
Remove the standard exhaust - replace with a DAM or the KTM SXC
Change the jetting - to suit the above changes

Install 12 ltr tank and seat - makes the bike a little narrower, reduces weight and changes seat position.

Replace some of the plastic parts - bring back the sharp look of the bike.
